Liana Salvador is in her second term as Vice-President Education of the Ryerson Students’ Union and is a nursing student with a passion for social justice and human rights. In the fall of 2009, Salvador led the charge in organizing and facilitating the CFS Task Force on Campus Racism in order to identify and challenge discriminatory practices in the university. She has been working with student representatives to address poverty and promote affordable and accessible education by meeting with MPs, MPPs and City Councilors to address issues of student debt and high tuition fees. She has worked to build a coalition of students, staff and faculty at Ryerson to collectively oppose budget cuts and tuition fee hikes that threaten the quality of education on campus.

Liana has worked to defend women’s rights by supporting and speaking at International Women’s Day, fighting for women’s reproductive rights in clinic defenses, working with women’s organizations for the G20 reproductive rights rally and by coordinating the No Means No campaign at Ryerson University. This past year she mobilized with community organizations to push back against Quebec’s oppressive Bill 94 – which would deny essential public services to women who wear the niqab. She and the RSU are now working to create a sexual assault support line to provide a student-run peer support service for survivors of sexual assault. Liana intends to dedicate her nursing career to the promotion of women’s health and equity and is currently a volunteer at Hassle-Free Clinic.

Miranda K. Hassell is co-chairperson of the Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign. Miranda is a second year ACS student taking the Equity and Diversity Studies option and minoring in Non-Profit Management. She’s passionate about friends, family, people, food, traveling, learning and the White Ribbon Campaign. She’s also weirded out about writing about herself in third person. However, she is nonetheless very excited to be speaking and sharing at this conference.

Alan Sears teaches Sociology at Ryerson University and is a long-time activist in queer and radical movements. He has written about queer movements, AIDS/HIV, the education system, work and radical renewal.

It is disproportionately young men who carry out this brutalization, so full liberation means challenging the particular kinds of masculinity that promote violence against both women and those perceived as “queers” says Alan in his article ’30 Years On: The Toronto Bathhouse Raids and Sexual and Gender Liberation’  in the New Socialist Webzine

SIFE Ryerson is asking everyone coming to the ‘What Makes a Man’ White Ribbon Conference and ‘Behind the Masc’ keynote event to bring a canned food item for the Let’s CAN hunger drive. They will be giving away prizes for those who bring items (to add to the good feeling you get from giving!)

” Campbell’s Let’s CAN Hunger challenge
started in 2009 where each university united all in the good spirit of competition and resulting in helping to alleviate the growing hunger problem across the country. This year, SIFE Ryerson has decided to enter and this is the beginning of the challenge, collecting for Urgent Hunger Relief.  We WILL CAN hunger”

The StartMeUp (SMU) Ryerson program is designed to provide entrepreneurs with the education, resources and funding to start and expand their businesses. No matter what the idea, be it product or service, for profit or non-profit,  we are here to help. Our program utilizes a customizable 4 stage process that enables participants to turn their ideas into reality.

Ruthie Anderson will lead conference attendees through a Yoga Stretch break at their seats, at the mid-afternoon point of the ‘What Makes a Man’ White Ribbon Conference at Ryerson University. Ruthie will help us stretch after a day of amazing conversation and discuss intersections of Healing Mind, Body and Soul as we move into a section of the conference looking at how gender impacts our connection to health, healing and nutrition.

Ruthie Anderson is a 3rd year nursing student that has adopted yoga into her life from a very young age. Having practiced yoga for its numerous mind, body and spiritual benefits for over 8 years, she became a Registered Yoga Teacher through Moksana Yoga Centre in Victoria, BC in 2008. Her belief in preventative medicine coupled with social justice has led her to teaching experiences at the Ryerson Womens Centre and at Spirit Wind Internal Arts on a donation basis.
