Humberto Carolo discusses ‘What makes a man speak out about violence against women’ at the White Ribbon Conference at Ryerson.

Humberto Carolo is the Director of Programs at the White Ribbon Campaign. He works collaboratively with local and international partner organizations to develop educational strategies to engage men and boys in promoting genderequality and ending violence against women.  Humberto managed the Canada-Brazil Cooperation Program resulting in the development of a national fatherhood campaign promoting greater involvement of men in the care and development of their children; a global symposium on engaging men and boys;
the development and cultural adaptation of the Youth Education and Action Kit and subsequent deployment to 2,000 schools throughout Brazil; and a workplace toolkit promoting greater engagement of men in gender equality in work and family life.

Over the past year, Humberto worked with the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity and Sri Lanka’s Women Defining Peace to increase the capacity of civil society in both countries to engage men and boys in gender equality. Previous to his work with the White Ribbon Campaign, Humberto led the Youth Community Education program at Canada’s largest AIDS Service Organization, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, where he developed educational, support, and outreach programs for vulnerable youth and youth-serving agencies, and
chaired various community-based coalitions and networks.  He founded Toronto’s Youth and HIV Network, and chaired VIVER, the Portuguese-speaking HIV/AIDS Coalition, and the Toronto Coalition for LGBT Youth.

During his earlier academic career, Humberto took on various leadership roles including President of CIUT 89.5FM, and Executive Coordinator of the University of Toronto Sexual Education and Peer Counselling Centre.  He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto, in Sociology, Political Science, and Portuguese, and is a graduate of the Non-Profit Management and Leadership Program of the Schulich School of Business, York University.
