Buddhika Bellana was the winner of the Poetry Slam contest at part 2 of the Urban Hip Hop Union‘s Love, Hip Hop & the Spoken Word feat. SHIHAN’. and will open for world renown spoken word poet Carlos Andrés Gómez at ‘Behind the Masc’ the keynote event for the ‘What Makes a Man’  The White Ribbon Campaign Conference at Ryerson University on Saturday February 12th.
Ryerson White Ribbon Campaign’s Jeff Perera was excited to co-facilitate the first portion of the event, a discussion with Shihan.   Check out Lovehard’s review of the show with pictures and video!
Buddhika Bellana was born in London, currently resides in Brampton and of Sri Lankan descent. A full-time student at Glendon (York University), Buddhika aspires to work somewhere in the field of Neuropsychology. ” Also, I moonlight as a slam poet. Words are my creative outlet. As a lover of Hip-Hop, I started writing rap early in highschool. Inspired by the likes of OutKast, Eminem and Mos Def, just to name a few. Eventually, in the 12th grade, I stumbled upon those Def Jam Poetry Slam videos that are peppered all over the internet – it was love at first sight. I saw a couple vids by the Shihan and Saul Williams and I had no choice but to try my hand at “spoken word”. Now, I’ve done quite a few open mics, a couple slams, and done performances for conferences about various social issues. Its just something I love doing and hopefully will keep doing.”
